My grandmother often tells me to use my tongue to speak life over myself and says, “You are God’s child, and God don’t make no junk, honey!”

Grandma is right. We are all God’s children, created in His image, and we are masterpieces. So, why then, do we talk down to ourselves so often and say mean things to the person staring back at us in the mirror? How come we tear ourselves down instead of building ourselves up through truth and affirmations?

If you want to get better at using what Proverbs 18:21 calls “the power of the tongue” to speak life and not death, EEW Magazine Online is sharing 5 positive things you need to tell yourself every day.

#1 I am enough. Stop picking yourself apart and focusing on what you lack. God has put in you everything you need to accomplish your divine goals and dreams. You are enough because the God you serve is more than enough.

#2 I can do this. Through Christ, you can do all things, even hard things that stir up self-doubt. While no one feels confident in themselves all the time, we should always be confident in God, knowing that it is His power working through us that makes the impossible possible.

#3 There is room for me. Sometimes, it may seem like you haven’t quite found your rhythm, your groove, your space, or your lane just yet. Don’t worry about that! It is not too late for you, and there is still room in the world for your unique gifts, talents, attributes, and contributions. One of the many names of God is Rehoboth, which means, “The Lord has made room for us” (Genesis 26:22).  He has not forgotten you or left you out!

#4 God loves me. Negative life experiences and messages, personal hurts and betrayals, can leave us feeling unloved and broken. Remind yourself daily that God loves you with an everlasting love. Pray Ephesians 3:18 over yourself, that you would be fully capable of comprehending “the length, depth, and height” of the amazing, unending, unconditional, unfailing love God has for you. His love is the greatest love!

#5 I am already validated. Instead of looking outside of yourself for praise, validation and approval, rest in the truth that the blood Jesus Christ shed for you already makes you worthy. The Lord delights in you and treasures you. You are the apple of His eye, and you are in the palm of His hand—the safest and most beautiful place you could ever be.

Start with these 5 incredible affirmations and add your own! And always know that what you believe about yourself and speak over yourself impacts your future and your destiny.

That’s all the more reason to choose your words carefully, prayerfully and purposefully.
