Devotion: Something good is on the way

I had never seen anyone so happy to come home empty-handed. But our two sons, Kedar and Kaleb, beamed as they raved about their awesome fishing trip with Dad— despite not catching a single fish. Their weekend outdoor excursion, full of food, laughter, conversation and a long wait by the water, came to a non-climactic end.
The Hobbs men, like Simon Peter and the other fisherman featured in Luke 5, toiled for hours and didn’t reel in anything. Only my trio received no epic command from Jesus to launch out into the deep for a miraculous haul. Even still, my happy-go-lucky teens were perfectly content to have their father on the hook for hours of uninterrupted fun together.
What if all believers had this same adoration for their Heavenly Father without constantly fishing for rewards, blessings and breakthroughs? Although it is God’s will and desire to bless us, He wants us to be very clear about why He performs miracles in our lives.
Earlier today, I was reading John 6:26 and was struck by Jesus’ frustration with the crowd that pursued Him the day after He fed 5,000 with two fish, and five barley loaves. Jesus told them, “You want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs.”
We see from Jesus’ words that the hungry mob completely missed the point of the miracles. The Messiah didn’t want to be chased down simply to fill natural cravings for bread and water, although He happily did that. According to verse 35, Jesus was showing them that He was “the bread of life.”
You see, He was the prophesied Messiah and the spiritual revelation of the Manna God rained from Heaven for the Israelites when they were under the leadership of Moses in Exodus 16. Jesus’ miracle was to inspire faith in His deity and not merely awaken hunger for His bounty. He was interested in proving He was the son of God, so others would place their faith in Him.
“God is going to work a miracle for you! When He does it, be sure to remember WHY He did it: because He wants to get the glory!”
Sadly, to this day, many believers miss the point of the miracles Jesus works, the blessings He provides and the needs He meets. Even now, He is all about revealing Himself as the Savior of the world and the all-powerful One who is to be served, worshiped, and glorified.
Friend, there is nothing wrong with expecting and desiring blessings, breakthroughs and miracles. In fact, I feel led to tell you good things are on the way for you. Just don’t forget that the Giver of every good and perfect gift passes out those gifts so those who see His works will glorify Him. Through this devotion, I believe the Lord is putting you in the right mind frame to reap what He has in store.
When you get what’s coming next, be careful to walk in humility and give God the glory. Know that God gives blessings to you to showcase His awesomeness through you.
When God pours out His goodness, favor and abundance on you, be the embodiment of Psalm 145:11-12 ESV, which is what I’m stirring into your cup of inspiration. It says, “They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom and tell of your power, to make known to the children of man your mighty deeds, and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.”
As you drink down the contents of your cup, get ready for good things and stay focused on the reason why God is blessing you. He wants to use your life as a platform to showcase His glory. If He can trust you to give His name the glory, He will perform glorious works just for you!
Now let’s pray.
God, I praise You for all the blessings that are on the way for me. When you bestow Your bounty upon me, I will forever give Your name the glory, and point others toward You. Thank You for choosing me as a testimony of Your power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
