So Sweet: Duchess Meghan surprises Malawi students

EEW Magazine News // Global // Charity

Though Duchess Meghan Markle, 38, could not be onsite during this portion of the African tour she and Prince Harry have been on, she did go out of her way to surprise a bunch of Malawi students via Skype.

Sunday, Sep. 30, 2019, marked a sweet moment resulting from the Duchess of Sussex’s work with Nalikule College, Lilongwe, that serves an amazing group of women who attended school with the help of Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) and its 20-year-old alumni network College Admissions Mentors For Africa (CAMA)

The organization that is breaking the cycle of poverty and inequality for young women in rural Africa is getting a big push thanks to Duchess Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

These CAMA women are part of a major network across Africa, which has 140,000 members and 17,500 in Malawi alone. Through this global nonprofit, enrollees are obtaining education, economic, and leadership opportunities that would not otherwise be available to them.

This program is not simply about personal advancement, however. These positive female role models, leaders and entrepreneurs, are also working hand-in-hand with CAMA to lift their communities out of poverty.

Money distributed by CAMA goes directly to each of their alumni, who then use their own resources to support another three children to attend school. It’s a wonderful way to pay it forward.

Along with support from the Queen's Commonwealth Trust—of which the husband and wife serve as president and vice-president respectively—CAMA and CAMFED are changing the lives of many young girls though education and empowerment. As heads of the QCT, The Duke and Duchess both believe in the power of education to empower young girls, and change society as a whole.

Prince Harry witnessed firsthand how the UK aid the young women are receiving is helping them succeed. The project is supported by the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, which Harry is president and Meghan is vice-president. The U.K. funds ensure that young women get at least 12 years of quality education.

EEW Magazine Online loves to see empowering women empower other women, which is precisely what Duchess Meghan Markle is up to lately.
