"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).
The enemy is determined to rob us of joy, but Jesus promises us a life filled to the brim. So how do we cling to this promise—and hold on to our joy?
Amid life’s many roles, we can choose joy by standing firm in God’s Word and resisting the enemy’s tactics.
Of course, this isn’t always easy. Life brings countless responsibilities and unexpected challenges. We juggle many roles—wife, mother, friend, employee, sister, mentor—and it’s easy for our joy to get lost in the shuffle. Yet joy is more than a fleeting feeling; it’s a deep-seated strength God has given us to carry through every season.
Let’s explore 7 surefire ways to hold on to that joy, no matter what’s going on around us.
1. Remember the Source of Your Joy
True joy comes from God, not our circumstances. When we anchor ourselves in Him, we can withstand anything. Jesus says, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). Remind yourself each day that joy is a gift from God, accessible to you at all times.
2. Practice Gratitude Daily
One of the quickest ways to counter negativity is by focusing on gratitude. The Bible encourages us, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Make a habit of listing three things each day you’re grateful for. It can shift your perspective, grounding you in what God has blessed you with.
3. Speak Life Over Yourself
Our words are powerful. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Use your words to encourage yourself. When feelings of discouragement creep in, speak joy over your life: “The joy of the Lord is my strength” (Nehemiah 8:10). Declaring God’s promises out loud can help replace negativity with God’s truth.
4. Guard Your Heart and Mind
Protecting what we allow into our hearts and minds is essential for maintaining joy. Philippians 4:8 encourages us to think about “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable.” Limit exposure to things that drain you, like negative news or conversations, and fill your mind with life-giving thoughts and truths from God’s Word.
5. Surround Yourself with Uplifting Community
Our relationships can either build us up or drag us down. Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages us to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds” and not give up meeting together. Spend time with people who inspire joy, and who remind you of God’s goodness. Community is vital for encouragement and strength.
6. Focus on Serving Others
Sometimes, shifting our focus outward can reignite joy within us. Galatians 5:13 reminds us, “Through love, serve one another.” When we help others, we’re reminded of our purpose in God’s kingdom. Serving takes the focus off our struggles, renewing our sense of joy as we see God working through us to bless others.
7. Embrace the Power of Worship and Prayer
Worship isn’t just about singing; it’s about connecting with God in a way that elevates our spirits. Philippians 4:4 encourages us, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Incorporate worship into your daily routine, and let prayer be your refuge. When we draw near to God, He fills us with peace and joy beyond understanding.
Remember, joy is more than a reaction; it’s a decision to stay connected to God’s strength. When we consistently choose joy, we’re better equipped to handle life’s demands, finding peace and purpose along the way.
Let’s declare, “I will not let the devil steal my joy!” and live each day rooted in God’s abundant love.
