In the dark and confusing seasons of life, we often feel lost and unsure of the path forward. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we always knew exactly what to do and which way to go on life’s unpaved, unpredictable roads? But even when we feel adrift, there is a constant we can anchor ourselves to: God's Word.

God's Word is sure when we are unsure; His promises are certain when we are uncertain; His truth is unchanging in changing times. When you seek the Lord’s divine wisdom, it will surely illuminate your way forward as you navigate even the darkest paths.

Here are ten of the best Scriptures to read when you don't know what to do, each with a brief summary and advice on applying it to your life.

1. Seek God's Guidance

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

When we trust in the Lord wholeheartedly, we surrender our limited understanding and align our ways with His divine wisdom. This act of faith leads us to the right path, even when our circumstances seem confusing.

2. Find Peace in Prayer

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

Instead of succumbing to anxiety, we can turn to prayer and present our concerns to God. This Scripture reminds us to be thankful and trust that God hears us, providing peace that transcends understanding.

3. Draw Near to God

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James 4:8 (ESV)

When we actively seek a closer relationship with God, He promises to come near to us. This closeness brings clarity and comfort, helping us navigate our uncertainties with His presence.

4. Walk by Faith

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 (ESV)

This Scripture encourages us to trust in God's plan, even when we can't see the outcome. Walking by faith means relying on God's promises rather than our limited perspective.

5. Rest in God's Peace

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27 (NIV)

Jesus offers a peace that the world cannot match, calming our troubled hearts. Embracing this peace helps us face uncertainty with confidence, knowing that God is in control.

6. Trust God's Plan

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (NIV)

God's sovereignty assures us that He is working everything for our good. This promise allows us to trust in His plan, even when we don't understand the current circumstances.

7. Seek God's Kingdom

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

Focusing on God's kingdom and His righteousness aligns our priorities with His will. When we put God first, He provides for our needs, guiding us through life's uncertainties.

8. Be Still and Know

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

In moments of confusion, taking time to be still and recognize God's sovereignty brings reassurance. This quietness allows us to hear His voice and find peace in His presence.

9. Wait on the Lord

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)

Waiting on the Lord renews our strength and gives us endurance. Trusting in God's timing helps us move forward with renewed energy and hope, even in uncertain times.

10. Rely on God's Strength

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 (ESV)

This powerful reminder encourages us to rely on God's strength rather than our own. His power enables us to overcome challenges and uncertainties, empowering us to move forward in faith.

As you meditate on these Scriptures, let them guide you through life's uncertainties. God's Word is a steadfast source of wisdom, comfort, and direction, lighting your path even in the darkest times. Trust in Him, seek His guidance, and rest in His promises.
