We’ve reached that time of year for reflection and introspection, as there are now less than three months left in 2024. At the beginning of the year, my only New Year’s resolution was to increase my joy.

As a busy professional with a high-stress job as editorial director of EEW Magazine, I didn’t want some generic process of manufacturing fleeting moments of happiness; I wanted real, lasting joy—the kind of joy Scripture promises in John 10:10.

Here are 7 things I found effective this year that will definitely carry over into the New Year that’s just around the corner.

1. Increased communion with God

I made spending time in the presence of the Lord, praying and studying His Word, a daily priority. I set a meeting time with the Lord—5:00 AM—to set the tone for my day. That time of prayer and devotion created the right atmosphere for everything else. No matter what came my way, my spirit was fortified, and my heart was centered in peace.

2. Practicing gratitude

This year, I became intentional about thanking God for even the smallest blessings. Each morning, I wrote down three things I was grateful for. It made a significant difference in my mindset. I found myself focusing less on problems and more on God’s provision. Gratitude shifted my perspective and deepened my sense of contentment.

3. Embracing rest

In a world that glorifies hustle, I learned to value rest. I gave myself permission to take breaks, unplug, and be still. This wasn’t easy for me, but I saw how much more productive and joyful I became when I operated from a place of rest rather than exhaustion. Rest is a gift from God, and I’m committed to honoring it more in the year ahead.

4. Meaningful connections

I invested in deepening my relationships this year. Whether it was spending more time with family or nurturing friendships that bring out the best in me, I prioritized being around people who filled me up spiritually and emotionally. These life-giving connections helped me feel supported and strengthened my joy.

5. Healthy boundaries

One of the best things I did in 2024 was learn to say 'no' when necessary. Setting boundaries, especially in a demanding profession, protected my mental and emotional health. I realized that being constantly available to others was draining my energy. Learning to step back and preserve time for myself became a key part of maintaining my joy.

6. Service to others

Nothing compares to the joy of giving. This year, I made it a point to serve more—whether through mentoring, volunteering, or simply being present for someone in need. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about helping others. It reminds me of the abundant blessings in my life and keeps my focus on what truly matters.

7. Pursuing purpose-driven actions

This year, I focused more on the things I felt called by God to do. Whether it was pursuing new projects, mentoring others, or stepping into areas of ministry, aligning my actions with God’s purpose for my life brought me immense fulfillment. When we walk in purpose, there’s a deep joy that comes from knowing we’re doing what we were created to do. As I move into 2025, I plan to continue seeking and following God’s purpose for my life with even greater intentionality.

As we approach the New Year, I encourage you to reflect on what has increased your joy and draw closer to the One who is the source of all joy. I’m excited to carry these practices into the year ahead, confident that God will continue to lead me into even greater joy.
