Statistics show that most adults go way over their limit when it comes to added sugars, which should make up no more than 10% of their dietary intake according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In a quest to improve her overall health, Christian comedian and actress Sherri Shepherd has kicked sugar altogether and is coasting toward a 3-month sugar-free milestone!

About a week ago on Instagram, the star of NBC’s comedy, “Trial and Error” celebrated her 78th day with no sugar. She also shared her search for places to help her “eat clean” and found an organic Mexican spot, Tocaya Organica, in California she fell in love with instantly.

The former co-host of “The View” who authored Plan D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes (Even If You Don't Have It), has been health conscience ever since being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes—something she manages through diet changes and exercise.

One of the delicious dishes Shepherd discovered that both pleases her palate and improves her health is a lettuce wrap with sea bass, Brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. With nutrient-rich meals like this, she’s sure to stay in optimal health.

Fans are impressed with the single mom’s latest diet. One Instagram follower said, “Wow Miss Sherri! That's great! So proud of you! I hope to have the power to give up sugar too.”

If you’re thinking about going sugar-free, you may be wondering is it possible or even healthy?

Dr. Kristina Rother, an expert on sweeteners, says, “Glucose (sugar) is the number one food for the brain, and it’s an extremely important source of fuel throughout the body. But there’s no need to add glucose to your diet, because your body can make the glucose it needs by breaking down food molecules like carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.”

So, there you have it.

Shepherd, who is losing weight and feeling great these days is proof that the body doesn’t need all that excess sugar to stay energized.

Check out this throwback interview of Shepherd talking about her diabetes and how making small changes have made a big difference in her life.
