The 10 Most Important Scriptures to Remember in Today’s Politically Charged Climate
By Mora Gray // EEW Magazine Online
In today's politically charged climate, it’s easy to become mean-spirited, divisive, and callous when confronted with differing political views. As Christians, we are called to a higher standard of conduct, rooted in love, compassion, and understanding.
While we should stand up for justice, fight for what is right, and advocate for those who are mistreated, persecuted, and maligned, it is crucial to do so in a Christlike manner. Our commitment to these causes should never lead us to forsake the principles of love, kindness, and compassion. By embodying these virtues, we can fulfill our responsibilities as dutiful Christians without compromising our faith.
Need help striking the right balance? Here are 10 of the most important Bible verses to help us navigate these challenging times with grace and wisdom.
#1 Speak Life
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)
This verse reminds us to speak words that edify and uplift, avoiding negativity and harmful speech.
#2 Gentle Words
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1 (NIV)
In moments of heated political discussions, responding gently can de-escalate tensions and foster understanding.
#3 Don’t Instigate
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9 (NIV)
We have far too many rabble-rousers in the world. Strive to be a peacemaker in all interactions, promoting harmony rather than discord.
#4 Listen More
James 1:19-20 (NIV) “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.”
Practicing patience and listening more than speaking helps prevent anger and promotes constructive dialogue.
#5 Pursue Peace
Romans 12:18 (NIV) “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.”
Make every effort to live peacefully with others, even amidst political disagreements. That may even mean disengaging from toxic, unproductive conversations altogether.
#6 Embody Virtues
Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV) “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”
This passage calls us to embody virtues that promote unity and forgiveness, and to release offenses—essential in a polarized environment, lest anger build up.
#7 Spiritual Fruit
Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”
Embracing the fruit of the Spirit can guide our behavior and interactions, fostering a positive atmosphere.
#8 Bless Them
1 Peter 3:8-9 (NIV) “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”
This wisdom from Peter encourages us to respond to negativity with blessings, maintaining compassion and humility, especially when it isn’t reciprocated.
#9 Be Open-minded
Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV) “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”
Humility and considering others' perspectives are key to fostering mutual respect and understanding.
#10 Avoid Judgment
Matthew 7:1-2 (NIV) “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Avoiding judgmental attitudes helps create a more accepting and compassionate environment. Name-calling, accusing, and labeling others is unhelpful.
Granted, remaining civil, kind, humble, and loving in such a negatively charged political climate is no easy feat.
By holding these scriptures close to our hearts, we can navigate political conversations with grace and embody the love of Christ, even in the most divisive times. Let us be salt and light in the world, spreading compassion, promoting unity, and reflecting God's love in all we do.
