Twenty years after stepping into the national spotlight on American Idol, Jennifer Hudson finds herself in a place of joy, gratitude, and grace. The singer, actress, and talk show host has accumulated a host of remarkable achievements—EGOT winner, proud mother, and a major inspiration to Black women everywhere. As she embarks on her third season of The Jennifer Hudson Show, Hudson reflects on the extraordinary path God has led her on to this very moment.

“God always has a little bit more for you than what you ask for. So, I stay in awe,” Hudson shared in an interview with Essence, where she covers their September digital issue. Her awe has been well-earned.

From winning an Academy Award for her breathtaking portrayal in Dreamgirls to joining the elite ranks of Black EGOT winners, Hudson continues to reach new heights. As the host of her own daytime talk show, The Jennifer Hudson Show, she has found fresh purpose and is energized through connecting with others and sharing their stories.

“Why sleep if you’re busy living your dream?” she added with her signature enthusiasm.

Connecting Through Stories: A New Chapter with The Jennifer Hudson Show

Hudson’s genuine love for connecting with others is key to her show’s success. She thrives on sharing stories of hope, faith, and perseverance. “I love to hear about other people’s journeys and experiences,” she said. “Those are the things that inspire me… When people sit in this chair next to me, I feel like I’m going on their journey by hearing them speak in the interviews, and I’m so intrigued by it.”

A Heart Full of Holiday Cheer: The Gift of Love Album

Looking ahead, Hudson is excited to spread even more joy through her first Christmas album, The Gift of Love. The holiday season, a time of reflection and celebration, holds deep meaning for her. “I am a holiday fanatic, and I’m glad I can share my joy with everybody now through music,” she explained. “When I was growing up, I used to recreate Oh Holy Night. Every year, I would find a new arrangement and give it to my family members as a gift. They were probably sick of my Oh Holy Nights, but that’s my favorite holiday song.”

Finding Joy in the Everyday: Prioritizing Self-Care

Amid all her accomplishments, Hudson has learned the value of self-care and nurturing her spiritual and emotional well-being. "When I wake up in the morning, I ask myself: What’s going to make me smile today? What does my soul need today?" she reflected. "Not as the boss lady or mama, but just for me, as Jennifer. If I can do one thing for myself during a busy day, it’s making sure I tend to my heart, mind, and spirit."

Faith, Perseverance, and Grace: Hudson’s Journey Continues

Through the highs and lows of her journey, Hudson’s faith has been her anchor. Her story is a powerful example of perseverance, passion, and God’s unwavering grace. As she enters this exciting new season, Hudson remains deeply rooted in the love of her work and the divine favor that has brought her this far. "I feel like not being discouraged by the roller coaster of it all got me here," she said. "I hopped on that American Idol roller coaster, and it’s been going ever since… I do this because I love it, and because God has blessed me to do it."

Jennifer Hudson’s journey inspires Black women to keep pressing forward, trusting that God always has more in store than we can ask or imagine. Her testimony is a beautiful reminder to stay faithful, keep dreaming, and let joy lead the way.
