U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he is ending his reelection campaign after losing the confidence of fellow Democrats regarding his mental sharpness and ability to defeat Donald Trump, leaving the presidential race in an unprecedented state of uncertainty.

In a post on X, Biden affirmed that he will continue to serve as president and commander-in-chief until his term concludes in January 2025 and stated he will address the nation later this week.

"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," Biden wrote.

With his withdrawal, Vice President Kamala Harris is now positioned to potentially lead the Democratic ticket, making history as the first Black woman to do so.

Biden, 81, did not mention Harris in his initial announcement but endorsed her completely as the 2024 nominee in a follow up post on X.

It remains to be seen whether other prominent Democrats will contest Harris for the party's nomination, despite her being a favored choice among many party leaders, or if the Democratic Party will opt to broaden the field for nominations.

Biden's decision comes after significant public and private urging from Democratic lawmakers and party officials to exit the race, following his unexpectedly poor showing in a recent televised debate against Republican contender Donald Trump.

Earlier this month, EEW Magazine reported that Biden said he would not heed Democrats’ calls to step aside unless the "Lord Almighty" said so.

Apparently, God has spoken. So, let the church say, Amen.
