Praise the Lord! Isabella Strahan is officially cancer-free!
On Thursday, July 18, the 19-year-old daughter of Good Morning America's Michael Strahan posted the exciting update to her YouTube channel. She has been curating a series documenting her health journey after having emergency surgery in October 2023 to remove a large medulloblastoma — a type of malignant tumor — from her cerebellum.
In her latest vlog, titled “Goodbye Hospital,” the college student and model filmed herself back at the Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center in Durham, N.C., where she had just had her chemotherapy port surgically removed.
It turned out to be a lot more painful than expected, as Isabella opened up about the discomfort she experienced the day after the port in her neck and stomach was taken out.
“My side hurts a lot. It feels like I got stabbed,” she said, adding, “I can’t stand up straight,” wincing in pain. “I also feel like the tube was going into my heart because my heart started cramping.”
She then showed the bandaged incision and told her audience, “It definitely doesn’t feel great.”
What did feel great, however, was the amazing news that all the cancer cells are gone. She received the clean bill of health after an MRI at her last doctor’s appointment to review her scans. She was joyful and euphoric after learning that she is now cancer-free, eight months after her brain tumor diagnosis.
“It was a great, great scan,” she said. “Everything was clear. Cancer-free and everything is great. I don’t have another doctor’s appointment until October.”
While the moment was wonderful, it was also bittersweet.
“I miss my doctors already and everyone who's helped me because they’re all so nice,” she continued, a hint of sadness detectable in her expression and voice. “I feel like I’m just saddened today knowing that I wasn’t going to be going back for a while because I love them so much. So, that was my last hospital vlog until October!”
Last month, Isabella reached another exciting milestone: the end of her cancer treatment journey. Since her diagnosis, she’s endured six weeks of radiation, four rounds of chemotherapy, and three brain surgeries.
In a vlog posted on June 16, she rang the hospital bell surrounded by her supportive family and friends. They celebrated with hugs, dancing, balloons, bubbles, and homemade posters, capturing pure joy in the atmosphere, a far cry from where it all began.
Isabella’s unexpected battle with brain cancer began during her freshman year at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles when she started experiencing headaches and nausea. Eventually, she couldn't walk straight—something she thought was vertigo.
However, her symptoms worsened on Oct. 25, the day she began throwing up blood, prompting her to seek immediate medical attention.
That’s when doctors discovered a rapidly growing four-centimeter cancerous tumor, larger than a golf ball, at the back of her brain. Medulloblastoma is a type of malignancy that accounts for nearly 20 percent of all childhood brain tumors, according to the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience.
Thankfully, Isabella has overcome it. In a June 16 Instagram post, after his daughter rang the bell to celebrate finishing chemo, Michael Strahan called her “a superwoman,” adding, “I am one proud Dad! Love you, Bella.”
