Update 9:00 PM-Donald Trump makes a formal statement on his official Truth Social page.

“I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania. Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.

It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Gunfire erupted at a Donald Trump rally on Saturday in what authorities are investigating as an assassination attempt, causing panic among attendees and resulting in fatalities. The incident occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh, during a campaign event for the Republican presidential candidate.

Former President Trump was quickly escorted away by security personnel after the shooting began. Live video footage showed blood on Trump's right cheek and ear, though he later emerged briefly to pump his fist in the air before being taken to a waiting vehicle.

According to a statement from the Secret Service and Trump’s campaign, the former president is safe and was taken to a local medical facility for evaluation. "President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow," spokesperson Steven Cheung stated.

The Butler County district attorney reported that the suspected shooter is deceased, as well as one audience member, with another person in critical condition. These details were corroborated by a Washington Post reporter on social media.

The shooting occurred just months before the November 5 election, where Trump is set for a rematch with Democratic President Joe Biden. Trump had just begun his speech when the gunfire erupted, leading Secret Service agents to quickly secure the area and ensure his safety.

The rally marked a significant event in the lead-up to the Republican National Convention, which is scheduled to begin in Milwaukee on Monday, where Trump is expected to receive the party's formal nomination.
