Sudan is grappling with the most severe hunger crisis in its history, with over 25 million people—more than half the population—facing acute food insecurity and starvation. The conflict-ravaged region of Greater Darfur is among the hardest hit, with aid groups reporting heart-wrenching stories of desperation and despair.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) paints a dire picture of the crisis:
Phase 1: Minimal - Families can meet basic needs.
Phase 2: Stressed - Families struggle to afford necessities.
Phase 3: Crisis - Families face severe food shortages and deprivation.
Phase 4: Emergency - Malnutrition and death become rampant.
Phase 5: Catastrophe/Famine - Mass starvation, disease, and death are inevitable.
Currently, 755,000 people are trapped in Phase 5 Catastrophe conditions, facing imminent death by starvation. Another 8.5 million are in Phase 4 Emergency conditions, their bodies slowly wasting away from extreme malnutrition. Fourteen regions are at risk of total famine, threatening to annihilate entire communities.
"The situation in Sudan is nothing short of desperate and heart-breaking," said Dianna Hobbs, President of Empowering Everyday Women, a nonprofit working on the ground to provide emergency aid. "As a global community, we cannot stand idly by as innocent lives hang in the balance. We must mobilize, and we must act now.”
Empowering Everyday Women is part of a global coalition of aid groups scrambling to respond to the crisis. But with the need so overwhelming, additional support is desperately required.
"Every donation, every prayer, every voice raised on behalf of the starving—it all matters," Hobbs emphasized. "The power to be the difference between life and death for a nation on its knees lies in our hands."
Here’s how individuals can be part of the solution:
Donate: Financial support is critical to fund emergency aid shipments. Visit EmpoweringEverydayWomen.org/Sudan to make a secure online donation.
Raise Awareness: Share information about the crisis in Sudan on social media, with friends and family—the more people who know, the more help can be mobilized.
Advocate: Contact elected officials, urging them to provide support for humanitarian efforts in Sudan.
"In the face of such overwhelming need, it can be tempting to feel helpless," Hobbs acknowledged. “But we know that even the smallest act can have a profound impact. Let us rise up, let us be the change, let us be the difference for a nation in crisis."
The clock is ticking. Millions of lives hang in the balance. The people of Sudan are waiting.
