A tragic shooting on Monday at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, has left a teacher and a student dead, authorities said. Six others were injured, with two suffering life-threatening injuries.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes reported that a 15-year old female student carried out the attack before being found dead at the scene. Officers discovered the suspect inside the school upon arrival, noting that no weapons were discharged by responding police.

The private Christian school, which serves approximately 400 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, is now grappling with the aftermath of what has become one of the deadliest school shootings of the year. According to CNN, this incident marks at least the 83rd school shooting in 2024, surpassing 2023’s record for the most school shootings in a single year since tracking began in 2008.

In addition to the fatalities, six individuals sustained injuries. Two students are in critical condition, while four others are being treated for non-life-threatening wounds.

The motive behind the shooting remains unknown. Police confirmed the violence occurred in a single area of the school and that the shooter’s family is cooperating with the investigation.

Madison Police Chief Barnes, who described the shooting as taking place shortly before 11 a.m. local time, expressed deep sorrow and frustration during a press conference.

“Today is a sad, sad day, not only for Madison, but for our entire country, where yet another police chief is doing a press conference to speak about violence in our community,” Barnes said. “Every child, every person in that building, is a victim and will be a victim forever. These types of traumas don’t just go away.”

Initial reports suggested five fatalities, but police later clarified the correct number.

Well into Monday afternoon, parents were directed to a medical clinic building about a mile from the school to pick up their children.

Some left the clinic holding their young children against their chests, others squeezing kids’ hands or shoulders as they walked side by side.

Established in 1978, Abundant Life Christian School was founded as a community Christian institution with the vision of providing academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment for families in the greater Dane County area, according to the institution’s website.

The school's mission is to develop students who are committed disciples of Jesus Christ through an excellent, comprehensive, Biblically-integrated educational program.

The school emphasizes strong academics, spiritual growth, and character development, aiming to educate the next generation of servant leaders who will impact the world for the glory of God.

The shooting at Abundant Life Christian School has sent shockwaves through the Madison community and the nation at large, reigniting calls for solutions to prevent violence in schools. The shooting occurred during the final week before Christmas break, a time typically marked by joy and anticipation for students and staff. Instead, the community now finds itself grieving this unimaginable tragedy.
