Grammy-winning hip-hop star, Megan Thee Stallion—real name Megan Pete—penned an emotional piece in Elle’s May 2023 issue detailing how she is healing from the trauma of being shot in the feet and injured by Canadian rapper and former friend, Tory Lanez, who was found guilty in December 2022.
In the personal essay, the 28-year-old “Savage” rapper said her prayer life has contributed to her healing from the high profile 2020 incident.
“These last few months, I’ve been healing after being in such a dark place,” she said, revealing the deeply felt pain of being called a liar, mocked by industry peers, and accused of nothing more than attention-seeking.
“The physical and mental scars from this entire ordeal will always sting, but I’m taking the appropriate steps to resume my life. I’ve spent the last few months off social media and taking time off for myself, spending time with my dogs, hanging out with my manager, Farris, and doing a lot of praying.”
Though admittedly still battling anxiety, Megan told Elle, “I’m in a happier place.”
“I’ve started journaling as a way to better process my thoughts, hopes, and fears. Prayer has also played a therapeutic role in my healing, because I can have honest and unfiltered conversations with God without any judgment,” shared the Houston-born rapper.
Megan was shot multiple times in both feet after leaving a Hollywood Hills party in 2020 with Tory Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, and former assistant Kelsey Harris. Megan needed surgery to remove the bullet fragments from her feet. Three months after the shooting, Megan accused Lanez of wielding the gun. The ensuing onslaught of criticism reached a fever pitch during Lanez’s assault trial.
Now that the trial is over, after taking some time off to regroup, Megan has seemingly reemerged with a fresh perspective—one that Christians all over the world can relate to.
“I was once told that you can’t have crucifixion without resurrection, and that statement resonated so deeply with me,” she said. “This is a rebirth of a happier and healthier me. I’m a survivor and I have—and will continue—to embrace the highs and lows of my journey.”
At the time of writing, Lanez, who has been found guilty and now faces up to 22 years and 8 months in prison, is yet awaiting sentencing. In the meantime, he continues to maintain his innocence.
