If you’re looking for a tear-jerking Mother’s Day story, look no further than Taraji P. Henson and her stepmother Angie; the two share an absolutely beautiful connection.
Recently, their loving relationship was put on full display as the “Empire” star, known for her role as Cookie Lyon, surprised her stepmother with a home renovation with the help of Houzz— an online community focusing on architecture, interior design, decorating, landscape design and home improvement.
The Oscar-nominated actress, who met her stepmother Angie at age 16 says she "loved her right away.”
“She just made my dad a better man. He was just lost, because my dad was homeless at one time when I was really young. She stepped into his life, and she was everything he needed. I was so happy,” Taraji beams.
One of the things she admires most is her stepmother’s selflessness. “You need a meal, you need clothes, you need somebody to watch your kids, your dog— whatever it is— Angie’s there for you,” says Taraji.
Sadly, in 2006, Boris Henson, the man who had been there for Angie and his children, passed away after battling illness. “I want to add more life and light into that house,” big-hearted Taraji tells Houzz. “We want to make the house hers, and still keep my dad in it.”
To make this dream-renovation come to life, the mental health advocate, who founded The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation to get rid of the stigma surrounding mental health in the black community, worked closely with designer, Stephanie Gamble.
Taraji and Angie’s heartwarming, tear-inducing reaction to the pulled-together design is just the Mother’s Day lovefest you didn’t know you needed. It’s also a reminder to do what the Bible says, which is to be loving and giving.
