Friday, June 1, 2018 is National Donut Day. Did you know that it’s about more than cheating on your diet and scarfing down your favorite sweet treats?
National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday in June and dates all the way back to 1938. It is observed in recognition of the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The brave volunteers helped boost the morale of the troops.
Who launched it?
National Doughnut Day was launched by the Chicago branch of the Salvation Army to help raise funds for and awareness of the organization's work in the community. The money went toward helping the needy during the Great Depression.
Fun Fact
Doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. This is how the infantrymen got their nickname, “doughboys.”
So if you choose to eat one of those fried rings of dough this Friday, you can do it knowing that, at one time, it served a really good purpose.
