Dr. Maya Angelou’s life inspired millions. A childhood victim of rape, a black woman born into poverty and segregation, she rose above it all to become a renaissance woman and cultural pioneer.

Though she died in 2014 at 86 years old, her words linger in our hearts, reverberate in our minds, and speak to our souls.

Here are 10 of our favorite quotes from the late author of “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” that help set us free, teach us  to soar, and make us better on this sometimes rough journey through life. Every empowered woman needs to know them.
