When you need a pick-me-up, sometimes you reach for the ice cream and chocolate, binge watch Netflix, or peruse social media. Though these temporary fixes may make numb you, distract you, or give some sort of temporary relief, there is no lasting change, healing, or real joy to be found in such things.

When you need a real pick-me-up with impact, grab your personal sword – the word of God (Ephesians 6:17) – and you’ll find just what you need. Interested?

Check out 8 of EEW Magazine Online’s favorite quotable Bible verses that can get you through any crisis, setback, or challenge!

ROMANS 8:37 “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” (KJV)

Feeling like a failure? Like you won’t make it? Frustrated with the obstacles you can’t get over and the battles fear tells you that you won’t win? Romans 8:37 will give you something to smile about. What? you ask. The fact that Christ has already made you victorious. You will not be defeated.

NEHEMIAH 8:10 “… And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” (ESV)

Grief comes in waves. Oceans of sorrow overwhelm you. Rip currents pull you downward, leaving you with no hope of ever rising again. And your soul cries, enough! Here’s fantastic news: the joy of the Lord is available to you whenever you fellowship with God. During the most difficult times, lean into your relationship with the Father, and He will give you unspeakable joy that overflows.

PSALM 118:24 “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (NLT)

When life presents complicated things, thank God for the simple things like breathing in fresh air, feeling the heat of the sun on your skin, and seeing the manifestation of new mercies with the dawning of each day (Lamentations 3:22-23). Despite how hard you try, when you’re at your lowest, finding a reason to rejoice isn’t easy. Yet, this psalm gives you a good one: You’re alive!

PHILIPPIANS 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (NKJV)

Anxiety and worry over life’s ups and downs can be a lot to handle. You alone cannot change things, but prayer, which has supernatural power, can. When you’re in a depressive mood, try crying out to the Lord. Give Him your burdens and cares. Bare your soul before Him with tears running down your cheeks. Guess what He’ll do: dry every tear, hear your prayer, and bring you peace that surpasses all understanding.

PSALM 43:5 “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” (NIV)

Talk to yourself when you’re in the dumps and ask, why are you so low? What’s wrong? Then command yourself to put your confidence in God and praise anyway. Love it or hate it, here’s the truth: sometimes, there are one too many reasons to be downcast. Nevertheless, there are so many reasons to give thanks to God, too. This verse shifts your focus toward the reasons you for praising and away from the usual justifications for sulking.

HABAKKUK 3:17-18 “Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines; though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock may be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls—yet will I rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” (NKJV)

Some seasons suck. They don’t feel good. Things go wrong. You won’t get the results you want to see or reap the harvest for which you believed. That’s okay. Happens to all of us – including the prophet Habakkuk who so eloquently made the case for praising God in dry, hard places. Regardless of how it looks, the writer says, God is always worthy to be glorified. And since your joy is found in fellowship with the Lord, what better way to tell your sorrows to get lost than to get lost in worship?

PSALM 18:2 “The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (NIV)

When the foundations of your world shift beneath your feet, and all that could be shaken is shaken, there is a stabilizing force greater than your storm. Lean on God, your rock, your safe place, your mighty refuge, your shield, your defender and deliverer. He will take care of you and rescue you in your time of greatest need!

2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.” (NLT)

Whenever and wherever you are lacking, God promises to give you whatever you need – not just enough but more than enough. He has more than enough joy, peace, provision, and blessings to go around. As He fills you up, you will then be able to bless others from a place of overflow. Though you may be lacking today, soon, you’ll be overflowing.

What’s ever your crisis, setback or challenge, God’s word addresses it. Even when you don’t know how to respond or what to say, quote Scripture, the most effective response in every situation.
